GP referrals

You should see your GP if you have not conceived after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse. You can be referred sooner and after six months if there is a known fertility problem. Your GP will organise various investigations then refer you to the fertility unit if you meet the NHS criteria for further investigation and treatment.

The criteria for referral includes:

  • Female age 23-43
  • Male age less than 55
  • Female body mass index (BMI) 19-30
  • Male body mass index less than 30
  • Non-smoker status
  • Permanent UK residency status and indefinite right to remain
  • No previous sterilisation procedures
  • No concerns regarding the welfare of a child raised
